Why did my views drop?
A drop usually has an ordinary cause. Before you change your style or blame the algorithm, go through this list with your own analytics open. Most of it works for YouTube videos, Shorts and Instagram Reels.
First, is it a real drop?
Compare like with like. A Short against your other Shorts, a long video against your other long videos, the same number of hours after publishing. A video that has been up for 6 hours is not behind one that has been up for 3 days. Also check that the report is complete: YouTube analytics can lag up to 3 days, so the last few days often look lower than they will end up.
The checklist
1. Seasonality
Viewing changes with holidays, school terms, exams, big sports events and the weather. Compare the same weeks last year, if you have the data, before you compare with last month.
2. Impressions or click rate?
Views come from how often your video is shown (impressions) times how often people click (click-through rate). If impressions fell, fewer people were shown the video. If impressions held and clicks fell, look at the title and thumbnail. They need different fixes.
3. A hit in the period before
One video that took off last month makes this month look like a fall. Take the outlier out of the comparison, or compare with your usual video instead of last month's total.
4. Traffic source shift
Check where views came from: search, browse and home, suggested videos, the Shorts feed, external links. A drop in one source points to a cause. Less search can mean the topic got less interest. Less suggested traffic can mean a related video stopped growing.
5. The Shorts feed and Reels
Short form views often come in waves, so they swing more than long videos. When many viewers swipe away in the first seconds, a clip usually reaches fewer people. Check how many viewers kept watching past the start, against your usual.
6. Reused or repeated content
Clips taken from elsewhere, reposts with only small changes, or a topic you just covered often get less reach than something new. If you post the same clip on several platforms, compare how it did on each.
7. An upload gap or a change in timing
A long break means fewer fresh videos to show and fewer reasons for viewers to come back. Posting at a new time, when your audience is less active, can also slow the first day.
8. The video itself
Sometimes a topic just interests fewer people, or the opening is slower. That is normal. Look at how many people kept watching, and at what the comments say.
How VidLasso explains a drop
VidLasso does the comparison for you, on YouTube videos, Shorts and Instagram Reels.
- Your usual. It takes the median views in the first 24 hours of up to 20 of your recent posts of the same kind, and needs at least 5 to have a usual.
- The gap. A post counts as a drop when its first 24 hours are under 70% of that usual. You see its curve hour by hour next to your usual curve. This part is free.
- The likely reason. For 3 credits, refunded if it fails, it writes a short summary with up to 3 reasons, biggest first, and one fix for next time. It checks timing against when your audience is most active, how many kept watching past the first 3 seconds, whether your title misses a search word people use, and, for Shorts and Reels, how the same clip did on your other platform.
- Only real numbers. Every reason has to cite a number from your own data. If an input is missing, that reason is left out instead of guessed.

Questions
Why are my YouTube views suddenly dropping?
Check the ordinary causes first: incomplete recent data, seasonality, a hit in the period before, fewer impressions or a lower click rate, a shift in traffic sources, and an upload gap. Compare like with like before you change anything.
Why is my Reel not getting views?
Short form clips tend to reach more people when the first viewers keep watching. A slow start, reused content or posting when your audience is less active are common causes.
Why did my Shorts views drop?
Shorts views come in waves from the feed, so they swing more than long videos. Compare against your usual Shorts, look at how many kept watching past the start, and check whether the topic or posting time changed.
How does VidLasso decide a post dropped?
A post is a drop when its first 24 hours of views are under 70% of your usual, which is the median of up to 20 recent posts of the same kind. It needs at least 5 of them.
